Battlefield 3 Dinosaur Mode: Can a Prank Become Reality?

Over the years, first person shooters have come a long way, evolved if you will. From humble beginings with arcade, rail shooters, then progressing to the genre as we know it today, developers still had to find a way to move on to the next level. The most recentevolution has come in the form of “Horde” style gameplay. Whether it be Horde mode, Zombies or Firefight, all the biggest shooters have got it but dinosaurs would just take it too a whole new level.
Pure Awesome
Ever since the demise of Turok, I miss Turok 3 and still have it for Xbox original, the dinos have been left at the back of everyones mind, a forgotten time when people were happier and had more of a challenge taking on giant lizards rather than some overgrown, alien insects. But dinosaur mode could change that in so many ways, not just as normal, horde style gameplay, it could set the bar for all future attempts.
Perhaps the best reason for Battlefield 3 to bring in a dino mode is diversity, adding modes is what makes games better, the more people can do, the longer the game will keep their attention for. Battlefield games already given us some of the most diverse combat, especially in the way of vehicle combat. So imagine, having mastered the use of jets in the game and then, just to mix things up, you could go out, shooting down some enormous pterodactyls and other scaly winged menaces. I want to shoot pteradatyls and I want to do it now.
Diverese combat doesn’t have to be limited to how many vehicles a game has, picture yourself reliving moments like the Tyrannosaurus chase from Jurrasic Park, but rather than being some unarmed palientologist, you are a badass, gun toting, US soldier, firing from cover whenever you can find it, then having to move on, after being spotted and the chase begins again.
Overall, dinosaurs are some of the toughest creatures to have walked the earth, for the sake of my point we will ignore the mass extinction, but even then, maybe they ceased to exist, not through poisoned plants, global warming or an asteroid strike, but through US Marines, travelling back in time because they fancied a bit more of a challenge than zombies and aliens. This may seem far fetched, but think of the way the Call of Duty series handled zombies, here was a series that had always took itself relatively seriously, but with the addition of zombies gameplay, it gave an oppurtunity to become more fun, less serious and gave us something to laugh about, even poking fun at world leaders gone by.
Unofficial. But Would Be Well Worth Paying For
While Jurrasic Park the game is due for a console release at some point, I always envisaged it would have more of an adventure feel rather than trying to build on the remains of a shattered Turok franchise. Whereas Battlefield is already a kick ass first person shooter, so having a horde mode just helps it to catch up with some of the other, big games in the genre that are already utilising this style of gameplay and let’s face it, this is the only thing Battlefield needs to catch up on.
Rest assured, whether or not we see a dino mode with Battlefield 3, the game will still be awesome, but it is a feature that shouldn’t be overlooked and having been hinted at already, there is probably at least some truth in the rumours. For now though all we can do is sit and wait until October rolls around and we find out if there is any truth in Battlefields dino mode.

League of Legends: Dominion at PAX

Dominion is a new battle arena for League of Legends. In a nutshell, it features Capture and Hold gamplay on a new 5v5 map. It is also a faster, more frantic game that only lasts about 20 minutes, with the longest timed so far at 26 minutes. Dominion is a response to player requests for a shorter game as current LoL battle arenas can go as long as 40 minutes or more.
In Dominion, the map is a roughly circular with five capture points arranged at the points of a pentagon, namedWindmillRefinery, Drill, Boneyard and Quarry. Teams respawn at the south east and south west, in between the towers. A circular highway connects the capture points and in the center lays the forest that is obscured by the fog of war. In a departure from other LoL maps, there aren’t any neutral monsters lying in wait for you in the scrub but there are health relics that can restore your health and mana, and a central tower that when tapped, provide buffs for each team.
The object in Dominion is to control more towers than your opponents. The more towers you control, the slower a timer counts down. The side whose bar depletes first loses the match. Tactics and strategy will count, not just plain which side and out-damage the other. Do you rush to the central tower to get your buffs first or start capturing towers? With only five on a side, do you have a couple people on the team disrupting the other side’s capture of a tower and the other three capturing towers?
Towers first have to be neutralized before capture, and any interruption can disrupt the capture. However, minions spawn between captured towers and will immediately rush to neutralize and capture the next. Minions are more of a tool than a resource pool in Dominion, but their use can be strategic as Champions can be interrupted by opponents beating on them or casting a spell on them, minions can only be interrupted by death and will stand there being beat on, intent on capturing a tower. So a strategy may be to capture two towers as quickly as possible and protect them and the minions while they capture subsequent towers.
Keeping Champions balanced with enough of a change to make a difference for the fast paced Dominion game, but not so that they play differently is a challenge for Riot Games. As Dominion is a much faster game, there are a bunch of tweaks to the game mode. There are changes in the store and some stat changes and buffs just for Dominion gameplay. Casters for example have their mana regen buffed in the Dominion game, however, to keep it totally transparent to players and for the Champions to still feel the same, there are only tweaks and buffs. There is no change for example, to what skills do. Also to support the faster game play, Champions start at level three and players with 1375 gold to spend in the store.
Riot Games is still in the process of making sure every champion is playable and viable on the map and yet still feel the same. Dominion will be a free download and available “soon.” As soon, I’m sure, as they feel it is ready.

Every MMO should consider Free to Play option

Lord Of The Rings Online
In the latest surge of MMOs in the past couple of years, they all started with a pay to play fee like $15 a month. However, as the games began to die and the community dwindled slowly but surely, the MMOs had to reconsider their marketing plan. Free to play is the best option for every MMO out there trying to start out or for MMOs that are dying and want to keep alive.
Dungeons and Dragons Online Stormreach Box Art
Dungeons and Dragons Online was a subscriber based MMO with a pay to play subscription, but the community slowly dwindled as time went on after the initial surge of players at release. Turbine was determined to keep the game alive and decided to make it a free to play game with in-game micro-transactions. DDO’s revenue increased to a near 500%, which is incredible for a struggling MMO. With this surge, many players have tried the game and now are playing and paying for things they want.
Lord of the Rings: Online, another Turbine MMO, was in the same case as DDO. Struggling and dwindling fan-base, but as soon as the game went to the free-to-play option, the game doubled in revenue and the player base increased to about 400%. It is amazing when you let the players at least try the game and if they enjoy it, they will help fund it to keep it alive.

Star Trek: Online, created by Cryptic, is also going to free to play by the end of this year. Hoping to see the same types of revenue that DDO and LotR:O have seen. Personally, I really wanted to try this out, but I refused to pay for the monthly because it did not look anything groundbreaking or innovative. It just looked like another MMO with quests, XP grinding, and generic monsters.
Now I know not every MMO will do the free-to-play option, and I don’t expect it to happen. I would like to see MMOs try a free-to-play option to a certain level. World of Warcraft and Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, have tried this to bring back a lot of old players and bring in new blood. I know people who have tried it and considered going back into the world of Azeroth or doing castle raids with their Squig Herders, which is what Blizzard and Mythic want.
All I am trying to say is, don’t completely throw out the free-to-play option for MMOs. It can produce some great revenues, create strong communities, and grow the game to certain extents that developers never thought it would get to. Not everyone can be like ArenaNet and create the Guild Wars series.

LittleBigPlanet PS3 costumes can be used on PS Vita, says Sony

Pete Smith, senior producer for Sony Computer Entertainment, has confirmed that costumes from the PlayStation 3 version of LittleBigPlanet will be compatible with its little brother version on the PlayStation Vita.

In an interview with Digital Spy at GamesCom 2011, Smith said that most costumes could be transferred, and that Sony wants to port as many over as they can, with the exception of those that have licensing issues.

"Technically it was very, very challenging. Extremely challenging. Because we're backwards compatible with PlayStation 3, so there's all of the content across two Blu-rays and all of the DLC... there's just so much content," said Smith.

"But actually, as we started to make the Vita version, we're trying to create a slightly different experience anyway. So it felt right that you would go on the PS3 for the more epic levels, then you go on the Vita and you would expect a different experience."

Smith added that LittleBigPlanet has "never been about comprimise," and that is why the game is "totally brand new from the ground up."

LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation Vita will be available as of next year.

Lifestyle stills paint a picture of wholesome gamers enjoying motion controls

Motion controls are fun, dammit! As part of its continuing efforts to promote the PlayStation Move, Sony has released a new batch of lifestyle photographs to drive that point home. The stills paint a picture of the perfect PlayStation life. Waggling all worries away, these honor rollers show no signs of missing the traditional controllers of yesteryear as they wand their way to a four-year degree from a private university.
We bet they floss twice a day.

Nintendo: Are They Fallen Stars?

Nintendo: Are They Fallen Stars?

Nintendo has always seemed like a powerhouse.  They gave extreme help to reviving the game industry back in 1985 and taking it to where it is today; it has the most memorable franchises of all time with many of gaming’s icons hailing from them, they have had such great portable devices that the first device able to even compete with it on even footing was the PSP (this is since 1989); and most recently, they were able to capture an entire market of gamers that others believed was never possible.  Sure, people hate Nintendo for all these things, but you have to admit, Nintendo has done a hell of a job in this industry.  They have always been the iron giants who do well no matter what seems to happen, which is why I think their current situation is an apparent shock to some people.  Sales are majorly dropping, the 3DS is not doing well, and public opinion on the Wii U is average at best.  The big question right now is “Is Nintendo in Trouble?”.  Will the giant fall?  With Wii sales majorly declining, the 3DS’s poor launch, in addition to the rising threat of mobile gaming as well as the Vita; and skepticism revolving around the Wii U, things are looking pretty bleak.  Through this bleakness though, I believe Nintendo is going to come out fine once again, though some things are going to need to change.
First off is Wii sales dropping.  Out of everything, I think this is smallest thing Nintendo needs to concern themselves with right now, especially since they seem to have countered it quite well with the Wii U.  Basically, Wii sales are not what they were last year.  Along with that, overall software sales have also dropped.  I really do not think this is something Nintendo needs to worry about though for a few reasons.  The first is that, they do consider this the end of their system cycle.  They see the Wii has had its life and really can no longer compete with the HD consoles.  The casual gamers they wanted to get into the market this generation they succeeded in, and the Wii still is the best selling of all current generation systems.  Due to that as well, it would be expected that hardware sales would drop for the sheer fact that everyone that wants one probably has one by now, and when going from a market where everyone wants a console that is not available, to normal to a sub-par sales record.  What I am trying to say is Wii sales were eventually going to go into this recessions off of the boom it once was.  Many consider the Wii an overall failure for Nintendo, I find that ridiculous because it was a huge success.  The Wii just had its time, and it is time to move on.  The complaint that was addressed with the Wii was the abandonment of the core gamer.  Now, with the Wii U, Nintendo is going to try to recapture the core.  Anyways moving on.
The next, and probably strongest problem Nintendo is having right now, is the 3DS.  The 3DS is an interesting case for Nintendo because it has three bad things going for it.  The first is the marketing of it as a system was poor.  I really do believe people were confused how the 3DS differred from an upgrade to the DS line.  The mass market does not know what this system was.  The next issue was the 3DS’s poor launch.  The DS is the best selling system of all time.  The software line-up for it is without a doubt one of the best, but looking at the 3DS line-up right now I, as well as many others, are scared.  Nintendo without a doubt released the 3DS before it was ready.  The large 3rd party support seen on the DS is nowhere on the 3DS right now and even Nintendo has kind of let the 3DS down.  All we are seeing are hordes of remakes on top of what looks like a bleak future for the system.  If Nintendo would have waited a year for the launch, even a couple months, I am convinced it would have gone much better.  Nintendo definitely has games in the work, and we have a few cool ones coming this year.  I know the 3rd party support seen on the DS will transfer over to the 3DS eventually, it just takes time to develop games.  However, Nintendo’s weak launch really hurt them.   Right now, they are not looking good, and launching a portable, against what looks like pretty decent competition (the Vita), makes Nintendo look weak as a company.  The Wii is currently in it’s death, the DS is currently going towards it’s death, and the 3DS had a weak launch.  These are the main reason the company is currently having troubles.  I am convinced though that give the 3DS a year or two, it will be the DS successor we truly wanted.  It all lies in the software.
The other scary thing the 3DS has to face, besides the coming competition of the Vita, is mobile gaming.  I am a firm believer in the idea that dedicated portable gaming devices will not fall to mobile gaming devices due to the sheer fact of differing game markets.  I believe both will survive together.  Right now though, with a growing mobile gaming market, investors are thinking that that means development studios should start going into the social gaming and mobile gaming market.  There is definitively a market for the mainstream developers out there, however the main gaming platforms are also important.  With the 3DS not doing well, the Nintendo investors are saying that Nintendo should start going into iOS game development.  I believe that would help do major damage to the console/portable gaming market and would only contribute to harming hardcore gaming in the long run.  More into the iOS threat at a later time.
Finally, the Wii U has a lot of doubt with people right now.  Listen, I bet Nintendo will easily recapture the casual markets heart with this system.  Sony and Microsoft are not moving any competition in against it, Kinect and Move are not going to be able to chip into Wii U market, and Nintendo can easily make an updated Wii Fit U with some cool tablet functionality and they are set.  The real challenge is creating a core system again, one that will be able to challenge the next generation.  We have already seen them trying to get a solid third party support (and surprisingly no first party, but we know that is coming), they need to convince the core gamers, that they lost with the Wii, that this system will work.  They also need to start making their motion controls something that really advances the way we play games. I believe the Wii U will be fine however, as long as they do not make the mistakes that they made with the 3DS.
I think it can be seen that Nintendo is going to come out fine.  As long as they have their systems come out with proper launch titles and find a way to balance in between the casual and core markets, I think they will definitely be fine.  Nintendo knows what they are doing, and maybe they will not live up to the DS and Wii, two of their biggest successes in a while, but I have a feeling that Nintendo is here to stay.

Dragon Quest X Officially announced for Wii and Wii U - First Video Gameplay

At a Japanese press conference this weekend Square Enix confirmed that the 10th title in the huge JRPG series will be available for release next year. Officially dubbed Dragon Quest X Mezameshi Itstsu no Shuzoku (though expect the name to make an English transformation soon), the game will be an “online RPG” that utilises all the wondrous features of the Wii and the upcoming Wii U. Read on for more details.
Dragon Quest X is the next title in one of the biggest series in gaming; Dragon Quest players have been walking, battling monsters and running for 25 years now and the numerous games that have come before it have just about all been a success. No surprises then that Square Enix are looking to push the boundaries with their next title; with this being one of the first games to be officially announced for the Wii U it’s sure to garner a lot of attention over the coming months.
At the conference the developers revealed that X will be an online RPG in which quest hunters “form parties and co-exist with other players in an online world”. It certainly sounds more like an MMO with that description, which would be an interesting yet probably debatable direction for the series to take. We can at least hope that there is an offline mode, one that doesn’t require and internet connection preferably. You’ll be able to play Dragon Quest X with the plethora of Wii controllers – Wiimote, Nunchuck, classic and pro controllers, on top of this you’ll also be able to plug in a USB keyboard for extra quick communication. When the Wii-U is released it will support updated graphics and different play methods. The game will also feature some sort of connectivity with the Nintendo 3DS, this is likely to act as a touch panel much like the Wii U controller in that version of the game.
Unfortunately, there’s no word as of yet on a Playstation or Xbox version and it looks as though it will stay that way; this is clearly meant to be an exclusive title. Although considering the success of Dragon Quest VIII on Playstation 2 it is something of a surprise that Enix have taken this route.
Finally, it is being reported that official documents for the title state that it will have a TBA “usage fee” meaning Japanese fans will have to pay an MMO-like subscription fee. Whether this means subscriptions for the inevitable US and EU release is unclear as this was not the case with the previous Dragon Quest title. Whatever the case Dragon Quest X is shaping up to be a very interesting title and I’m sure fans of the series are waiting with baited breath for ever more news. Expect news soon on the public beta, until then check out the first trailer and gameplay for Dragon Quest X Mezameshi itstsu no Shuzoku below:
